    Sources for Christian Anarchist Thought

    Saturday, June 30th, 2007

Here is a brief list of resources for those exploring Christianity and anarchism. This is by not means a complete list – just an old list I stumbled across on my hard drive. Send me more items if you know of any.
Ballou, Adin, Non Resistance and Government, (1839), in Patterns of Anarchy, eds. Leonard I. [...]

    Lowering the Voting Age

    Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

MP Sue Bradford is promoting a bill that would lower the voting age from 18 to 16. I’m fairly neutral on the bill but think that many of the objections to lowering the voting don’t stand up in my opinion. Let’s look at some:

Kids don’t know enough about the electoral process. This is reinforced by [...]

    The Secular State and Anarchism

    Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

    Recent reads include:

The Godless Constitution: A Moral Defense of the Secular State
Anarchism: A Beginner’s Guide (Oneworld Beginners’ Guides)

Anarchism is an average introduction to the ideology of anarchism. It main strength is also its main weakness – the weaving together of contemporary thinkers with the fathers of Anarchism. I was thankful for some leads for my [...]

Race, Neighborhoods, and the Misuse of Social Capital

    Friday, June 22nd, 2007

I have a chapter in a new book Race, Neighborhoods, and the Misuse of Social Capital, edited by James Jennings (published by Palgrave Macmillan). My chapter is called ‘Social Capital and Strong Communities in New Zealand‘. What the blurb says:
This anthology tackles four key issues in race, neighborhoods, and social capital: how is social capital [...]

    Is Plunket Sexist?

    Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Does Plunket allow student male nurses to do placements with them, or do they ban them, and only accept female ones?
If they have such a policy, as I’ve heard on the grapevine, then they should live up to their values, and do their best for all New Zealand’s children and get rid of it. All [...]

    War and the Gospel

    Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

In cleaning out some papers I came across this great quote from Jean Lasserre from his War and the Gospel (page 179). I originally found it in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. It remains as relevant today as then, and when it was written in 1962.
I absolutely agree with the commentary on the sixth [...]

    Issues of Democracy

    Monday, June 11th, 2007

In 2001 the State Department published an issue of Issues of Democracy on “RELIGIOUS FREEDOM AS A HUMAN RIGHT“. That issue is not listed on their website, but does exist, for those looking for it.

I finished two short books in the last few days.
Body Politics by John Howard Yoder is a brief, yet powerful study of five practices (he’d like to call them all sacraments) that the church has which have political import: baptism, Eucharist, dispute resolution, decision-making and the multiplicity of gifts. It’s good stuff and it’s easy [...]

    Public Theology’s Kairos Moment

    Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

Today I discovered that the International Journal of Public Theology started publication earlier this year. The first issue is available online for free.
The chair of the editorial board, and writer of the first article, is Rev Dr Will Storrar, formerly of Edinburgh, and now at CTI, Princeton. He is also the initiator of the Global [...]
